Evolutionary biology Research group The research of this section aims to understand the dynamics that regulate the origin, maintenance and distribution of biological diversity in time and space. Both empirical and theoretical approaches are developed to characterize and quantify the interplay between ecological and genetic forces that generate diversity at genome, population and community levels.

Apr. 8, 2021 Peabody Museum, 5th Floor 11 Divinity Avenue Cambridge, MA 02138 Ph: (617) 496-1193 F: (617) 496-8041 Evolution Evolution is a theory that explains how life on Earth has diversified into millions of different species. It is a key principle of biology and it connects and explains many facets of life. The theory of evolution states that the diverse array of organisms on Earth has evolved from a single common ancestor over time. Evolutionary biology is the subfield of biology that studies the evolutionary processes (natural selection, common descent, speciation) that produced the diversity of life on Earth. Evolutionary biology is a subdiscipline of the biological sciences concerned with the origin of life and the diversification and adaptation of life forms over time. These processes include natural selection, common descent, and speciation.
